YMCA Coventry & Warwickshire is calling on local people to take part in their annual ‘Sleep Easy’ fundraising event to raise awareness of youth homelessness and vital funds to support local young people in need.
The charity, which provides accommodation for 68 otherwise homeless young people, is looking to raise awareness among local people of what it is like to be on the streets for just one night.
Responding to demand, YMCA is delighted to announce that Coventry Rugby Club have once again agreed to host the event. Officials at the Butts Park Arena have donated their venue free of charge to show their support.
Participants will sleep in a cardboard box at the event, which takes place from 7 p.m. on Friday 23rd March to 7 a.m. the following day. By making their ‘beds’ for the night within the stadium grounds, the fundraisers will help local young people to build a better life.
Through this fundraiser, the charity is looking to raise awareness among local people of what it is like to be on the streets for just one night. Participants are asked to pay an entry fee and encouraged to raise money through sponsorship.
Lisa Carroll YMCA Coventry & Warwickshire’s Co-Director of Communications and Fundraising, said, “The 2017 Sleep Easy was really successful raising over £15,500 in just one night. More than 70 people slept out at Butts Park Arena, raising money to support our work with local young people in need.
“We’d like to encourage as many people as possible to sign up to Sleep Easy 2018. Whilst we can’t promise them a comfortable nights’ sleep, we can offer a glimpse into a different reality and a chance to make a real difference to the lives of others”.
Lara Hunter, Business Development Manager at Coventry Rugby added: “Coventry Rugby are delighted to once again support Sleep Easy.
“We would encourage anyone involved with Coventry Rugby to take a look at this event and consider either taking part or offering some form of assistance. We would always encourage support of the youngsters of the City and indeed the country, who are struggling with the everyday life.”
Participants will be provided with warm food and drinks and a plenty of cardboard to make a bed to ensure everyone is kept safe, warm and in good spirits.
Co-op’s Coventry Distribution Centre have generously committed to supporting the event by entering at a team to take part, donating the cardboard that will be used by participants and their partners Eddie Stobart are donating the vehicle to transport cardboard to and from the venue.
Speaking of the support pledged, Peter Conway Engagement Support Assistant said, “We have supported YMCA with painting one of their sites and with various donations, and we’re more than happy to be supporting the Sleep Easy event – caring for our local communities is part of who we are at the Co-op”.
All funds raised will be used within the local area to support local young people.
